Toronto police are trying to identify an Uber driver after a woman said she was sexually assaulted inside his vehicle.

The incident happened on Sept. 15 after a 25-year-old woman got into an Uber vehicle in the Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue area.

The driver transported the woman to her home in the Lawrence Avenue West and Avenue Road area and then sexually assaulted her while she was still inside the vehicle.

The driver is described as being between 26 and 30 years old with short, black spiked hair and a short chin strap beard. His Uber driver profile lists him as “Amritpal.”

“Upon learning of these disturbing allegations, we immediately removed the driver from our platform and have reached out to law enforcement to assist in any way that we can,” Uber spokesperson Xavier Van Chau wrote in a statement.

In a statement issued later Friday afternoon Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti, who has been critical of Uber in the past, said the incident makes the need for regulation of the service “even more glaringly obvious.”

“The safety of passengers is clearly a concern if there is no oversight on who is driving you around,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-3200 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
