Protesters demanding justice for two black men killed in interactions with police blocked a portion of Allen Road Monday evening.
The group, with Black Lives Matter-Toronto, blocked both northbound and southbound traffic at Eglinton Avenue.
The blockade, which ended around 9 p.m., followed a protest held in the city’s west end Monday afternoon following the deaths of Andrew Loku and Jermaine Carby.
Loku, 45, was fatally shot after an interaction with police overnight on July 5 after officers were called to a low-rise apartment building on Gilbert Avenue, near Eglinton Avenue West and Caledonia Road.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the circumstances surrounding Loku’s death.
Carby, 33, was shot and killed by a Peel Regional Police officer following a traffic stop in Brampton in September 2014.
Earlier this month, the SIU announced that the officer involved would not be charged.
“The message is that people in the City of Toronto and in the Greater Toronto Area, we are fed up of talking about police violence, about talking about a lack of police accountability, and not being taken seriously,” journalist and activist Desmond Cole said of the demonstration from the scene in a telephone interview with CP24.
“This is for all black folks in this city who have been unjustly carded, surveilled, assaulted or murdered by police,” a Facebook post for the afternoon protest created by Black Lives Matter-Toronto reads.
“We have not seen action. So we will take action.”
