The city is continuing to dig out after a blast of wintry weather blew into town overnight, dumping approximately 15 centimetres of snow on the GTA.

Ontario Provincial Police said they responded to some 850 road incidents over the past 24 hours. That included a massive pileup on Highway 400 in York Region Sunday night involving as many as 40 vehicles.

According to Environment Canada, Toronto typically sees an average of just 2.3 centimetres in April.

The snow made for a messy commute for many drivers, with Toronto police reporting dozens of collisions from Sunday evening through Monday morning.

In the city’s west end, five people were taken to hospital after a TTC bus crashed near Highway 427 and Dundas Street. Paramedics said all injuries are believed to be minor.

Another crash near Highway 409 and Martingrove Road sent three people to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The collisions prompted Const. Clint Stibbe to warn motorists to slow down and drive to the road conditions.

Hector Moreno, manager of road operations of the city, said that the city starts to scale back on snow equipment on April 1. So while city officials knew that snow was a possibility, the full winter arsenal of salters and plows was not at the ready as it would have been a few weeks earlier. Still, he said 115-120 salters – about 50 per cent of the usual number – were available citywide and put out multiple rounds of salt on the roads starting at 5 p.m. Sunday evening.

Most GTA roads were expected to be in better shape for the commute home Sunday evening.

As of 6:30 p.m., all weather alerts and statements from Environment Canada had ended for southern Ontario.

However frigid temperatures have in the GTA have not lifted yet.

Toronto's medical officer of health has issued an extreme cold weather alert as the temperature dips today. Later tonight, wind chill values are expected to drop below -15 C.

The temperature is expected to climb above the freezing mark Tuesday and to highs of 6 C and 8 C on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. But those warmer temperatures are expected to come along with showers and flurries. Sunny, warmer conditions aren’t expected to make a return until the weekend.
