Police say a suspect wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in Mimico on Thursday has been taken into custody.

The shooting took place in a parking lot behind an apartment building on Vanevery Street near Royal York Road at around 2:50 a.m.

Police previously said that the victim, 28-year-old Daniel John Lypka, was shot following some sort of argument with the suspect.

At a press conference held on Friday afternoon, Detective Murray Barnes revealed that the 21-year-old suspect is being sought for second-degree murder in the homicide.

The man was identified as a “direct result” of information from members of the community who came forward in the wake of the shooting, Barnes said.

“As recently as 15 minutes ago detectives from our team were in contact with his lawyer,” Barnes said. “His lawyer has told us that he is in his presence and he has assured us that after they have had discussions and he has given him instructions he will turn himself in at a police station.”

Accused was friends with victim

Barnes said that Lypka and the suspect were friends “and had been friends for a long time.”

The shooting, the detective said, took place as a result of an argument.

Police have not commented on the nature of that argument.

“There was a confrontation, there was an argument, there was a commotion and as a result Mr. Lypka was shot,” Barnes said.

According to police, Lypka was an apprentice plumber who was between jobs at the time of his death.

The detective said that Lypka was not married and did not have any children but was close with his family.

“They were a good family that lived locally. They are shocked that this could happen. They are a stand up family in the community,” Barnes said.

At approximately 4 p.m. Friday, 21-year-old Tre Williams Robert-Stevens was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

He is expected to appear in court at Old City Hall on Saturday.

Police are still looking for a red 2001 Honda Civic coupe that is believed to be connected to the murder. Its license plate is BYHE 883. It has a sunroof and a rear spoiler.
