Ride-sharing app Uber is branching out in Toronto with the launch of a new lunchtime food delivery service in the downtown core.

Starting Thursday, customers can order featured lunch items from participating Toronto restaurants and Uber promises to deliver the meals within 10 minutes or less. The new service, called UberEats, will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays.

The delivery service currently only covers the downtown area, from Bathurst Street to Sherbourne Street and south of College Street.

On the UberEats website, the company says there will be a flat fee of $3 for delivery.

While the current menu offerings appear to be relatively sparse, Uber could give food delivery services like Just-Eat and OrderIt a run for their money.

UberEats has also been rolled out in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Barcelona.

The launch comes amid tensions between Uber and the City of Toronto, which is seeking a court injunction to shut the ride-sharing service down in Toronto altogether.

The case is expected to be heard in June.
