Baby once caught up in Toronto transplant controversy receives new heart

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — A baby who was expected to receive a new heart from an infant at the centre of a transplant controversy has been given a new organ.

Lillian O'Connor, a three-and-a-half month old baby from Prince Edward Island, had been waiting for a heart since she was born.

She is recovering with her new heart at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where her parents met the mother and father of baby Kaylee Vitelli.

In April, Kaylee's parents had offered their daughter's heart, if she died, to Lillian.

However, Kaylee, who suffered a rare malformation of the brain and brain stem, recovered and was taken home to Bradford, Ont., on May 14.

Lillian received her new heart from a different donor.

A spokesman for Kaylee's parents says the infant was admitted to hospital in Newmarket early today after running a high fever.
