A woman is in hospital after being rescued from a burning residential building in Newmarket early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters found the woman on the second floor as they conducted a sweep of the burning building on Timothy Street, near Main and Water streets.

She was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

When emergency personnel arrived at the fire scene at about 2:40 a.m., the house, which is divided into eight apartments, was engulfed in flames.

Later, as firefighters doused the flames in a defensive position, part of the two-storey building's roof collapsed.

Eight people were inside the building when the fire broke out, and all eight have been accounted for, fire officials told CP24.

The fire's cause is under investigation.
