TTC suspends token sales, introduces temporary ticket
cp24.com
Riders wait to board a subway at the Bloor platform in Toronto, Friday, Nov. 13, 2009.
The Toronto Transit Commission is suspending multiple token sales until January 3rd next year and introducing a temporary adult ticket starting Monday.
In a press release, the TTC says the measure has been put into place to ensure “sufficient” tokens meet the normal demand in January after the fare increases come into effect.
The temporary adult ticket will not be sold after January 2, 2010. Customers with temporary adult tickets after that date will be required to add 25 cents to the farebox with their ticket to match the new 2010 adult fare of $2.50
Temporary adult tickets will cost the same as the current token price of five for $11.25 or 10 for $22.50.
There’s no limit to the number of temporary tickets people can purchase, but after Jan. 31, 2010 the ticket will not be accepted.
The TTC says without taking the measures of halting token sales, the commission could lose more than $5 million in next year’s revenues because of token hoarding.
Tokens will continue to be accepted as fare, and single tokens can still be purchased at token vending machines throughout the subway system.

All these changes are far too complicated for me. I like simplicity. Perhaps I will begin hoarding my toonies and loonies instead of tokens/temporary tickets/temporary tokens/whatever else they release!

What a joke! The people who are hoarding tokens are doing it because they rely on the TTC 24/7, and are trying to save a buck. The fare increase and the lack of a distance based fare system actually encourages people to live in the suburbs and ride transit occasionaly, insted of those who chose to live close by and ditch car ownership in return for using transit around the clock. This is the TTC's thanks for your years of loyalty.

This is one of the dirtiest tricks the TTC has ever played on its transit riders.

Oh, no one is going to get mad at this. No one who relied on automated entrances for sure.
My favourite part is the $5M number they pulled out of thin air.
Why not continue with the already infuriating 5 token limit?

Its amazing how low the TTC will sink to squeeze the last dime out of TTC riders. Well really what they should look at is how their very own unions and employees have squeezed every undeserving cent out of them. Anyone remember the staff member who worked overtime and made $100,000? Don't worry TTC, we didn't forget.

I hope that the TTC will also put on extra ticket takers since some of us entering the ttc via turnstyles won't be able to access the token only ones...

Just curious, how much more will printing off these "temporary" tickets cost? I thought the TTC was broke!

Such a joke, thing is tokens can be used at automated machines, but with a ticket you have to line up for the privilege of paying your fare. What a backwards system and such an embarrassment compared to elsewhere in the world.
Wonder if the ticket takers get a pay raise this year.

One question, with no tokens how are people supposed to use the unstaffed entrances? Do I have to pay the ridiculous cash fare now?
Quite the joke indeed. Especially since at Kipling you can only get to the buses through the automated gate. Isn't this a violation of disabled rights ?

truly frustrating to limit the amount of tokens sold to an individual...
I live in Mississauga and luckily have two choices:
- get a drive to Kipling Station and take the subway, or,
- drive 2 minutes to a GO Train station and ride in comfort to downtown.
Sure, the GO Train costs almost twice the amount of the TTC from my location but it's well worth it! You also do not have to deal with the rudeness of the TTC collectors either!!!
I guess that's why TTC stands for "Take The Car"!?!?!?!

New TTC motto should be, do what we say or else! Sounds like a socialist run system to me.

Cry me a river TTC!! Regular riders are already pissed off with the coming increase and now suspending token sales is going to put some of them over the edge.

LOL, I am sure that ALL TTC employees will get a raise this year and those of us that haven't had a raise in 3 years will have to pay the price. Talk about not thinking this thing out before hand, but what can you expect from a backwards system.

How much more will those "temporary" adult tickets cost to make??
How about those useless TTC papers that are given out "do not stand on yellow line" printed in color no less - not to mention everything but environment concious.
I don't feel that the fare increase is going to do much good for that "DEBT"...
Keep on going TTC... keep on pushing away your "valuable" commuters!

You're not only doing the sensible thing Scott O'Malley, but you're doing the right thing. The TTC shouldnt be in the business of getting people from city to city

I can't believe the whining from those that take the Loser Cruzer. Get a car, ride a bike or walk. You are embarrassing yourselves with your little temper tantrums. No wonder the drivers have barriers now, just so they don't have to hear the whining.

All these hassles with the TTC, the daily delays, the constant over-crowding of the trains and most of all the exorbitant price are all the reasons I moved out of the GTA last year, got a job elsewhere and no longer need the TTC (hopefully ever again) except on occasion. TTC lost me as a daily customer long, long ago. My advice to everyone ... walk as much as you can.

More money being spent, how much may I ask that is being spent on this measure? TTC along with the City is a joke, if they ran their home like this , they would be homeless. If clues were shoes alot at city hall, the TTC along with Governments of Ontario and Canada would be barefoot.
When is it going to sink in: Provide service - real service and there would be no problems or complaints.
Hell I would pay 150 bucks a month for a pass if that would mean I was not waiting for a bus or a street car , longer then 20 minutes in downtown.
and buses running in packs of 3 or 4 all throughout the day on dufferin is not service... try and have them spaced out 2 to 3 minutes.

Fare increase for a service decrease. Unlike others i found it a joke. Unfortunately I had to take the blue night bus service most other days because of my work and i haven't found a single day when Bloor danforth line bus was on time or frequent. Like the North South Young lane.
Moreover, even though there was complain about some operators. Though we never saw any action taken against them.
Lastly, the transfers are allowed one way. But at Vancouver BC. They worked up a nice system should learn from them.
Last week when i was waiting for a bus, a fellow from NY visiting Toronto tell us they have a big subway system but they pay a lot less. I wonder why we need an expensive ride why can't we have a secondary line which will make TTC in to completion to make them really great that they use to be. Not long back.

This has to be a joke? Somebody must be sending this rumour out and it is spreading like wide fire to get us TTC riders mad. No organization would be stupid enough to do this to their customers would they?

Token Hoarder
First they slap us in the face with the 5 token limit, then they kick us while we are down on the ground....
TTC sure likes to alienate its customers...

I am a middle-aged woman with arthritic knees who relies on the subway and an automated entrance that is at least 10 min. closer to my house than the other entrance at the nearest subway stop. I resent having to make that extra (painful) walk because I will not be able to buy tokens or use that entrance until JANUARY 3. That's six weeks from now! To make matters worse, there could be cold, ice and snow between now and then to make the journey more miserable. I object to being punished by the TTC because of a few peoples' greed (including the TTC's!) I demand that there be an attendant in the booth at the automated stops for the same hours the subway runs until Jan. 3 so people like me can buy and use these temporary paper tickets. I go downtown about three times a week, so it is not worth my while to buy a weekly or monthly Metropass. This token ban adds insult to injury after the recent fare hikes and badly-handled service disruption between Bloor and Eglinton (also on my route!) I am irate as a taxpayer and plan to join the TTC riders' union!!!!!

I would kill to pay the 2.50 for reliable bus service. I live in York Region and up here the bus costs 3.25 for every rider. No adult, student, senior fare prices. All one price. 3.25 for bus service that runs once an hour. Oh woe is me that I will have to pay 2.50 instead of 2.25. Get over it people. How do you think they get money to pay for buses? Oh I know no one should pay for anything. I would love to see the state of some people's cars if they think that there is no cost of upkeep and maintenance. Typical Torontonians. GET OVER IT.

What a joke.....They say that they will loose 5 million with the token sale? What about the MILLIONS they are making with the price hike? The government is talking about all this clean air, car pool and tranist yet they do nothing for the average customer. Thats $130.00 a year providing we work every week, 5 days a week.... WHAT A JOKE
just what we need in the economy, more travel expenses
Glad I dont ride

York Region is $3.25. But yet the only riders that make the biggest stink is Toronto riders... why is that? You can still get from Etobicoke to Scarborough for $3!! Try doing that in a car or a taxi!! Stop complaining and try to appreciate how much more you could be paying elsewhere, or for different modes of transportation.. enjoy your bus every 30 seconds. Oh ya, Cyndy, most routes in York do run more often than hourly. Only a select few routes and mainly on Sundays do they run hourly. Also students and seniors and adults can buy tickets for cheaper. $19 for 10 for students, $15 for 10 for seniors/child, $26 for 10 for adult. Just wanted to point that out... otherwise.. Torontonians.. STOP COMPLAINING.. you could have it much worse!

"The temporary adult ticket will not be sold after January 2, 2010. Customers with temporary adult tickets after that date will be required to add 25 cents to the farebox with their ticket to match the new 2010 adult fare of $2.50"
I thought the fare was going up to $3.00 not down to $2.50

Thanks to the media for informing me that the TTC is issuing a temporary ticket. As a driver for the TTC let me let you know that the commission does not inform us that this is going on. Now i will not let some sweet old lady stand in the frezzing cold for kicking her off my bus for giving me a ticket that i have never seen before.
I mean the public can still walk in for free at the subway or just not pay the driver a fare. We dont care toronto, as long as the commission pays us each wednesday and we get a 3% raise each year you can put rocks in the fare box if you like.

Can you believe that the TTC has found another way to stop people from taking public, transit. Not only are they putting up the price which lets all admit, really affect the poorer people in the city in the most as they are the ones who take the TTC because they don't have the choice of wether to drive or not.
I have a very simple solution if the over paid exec of the TTC can't manage to do there job and make the TTC run effectively and on budget, maybe the budget short falls should come from getting rid of a few of them as they surely can't be worth the money we are paying them.
The time has come to change the way Toronto runs, it is no longer good enough for the citizen to sit back as there government and local services continually push them around and Screw them over, Can you say HST. Forget the rich getting richer, lets stand up and say lets make the poor richer.

Why Does The TTC Suck so much, how is it possible that Toronto has managed to make the worst decisions in the world when it comes to the best way to run the city and it's services.
Fire the Exec, through out the unions, and put the people first for once.
We pay the taxes, we pay the fares, and it should be us that you are working for so start doing your jobs or get the heck out of office.

Why shouldn't we be complaining about this suspend token sale? How much CAN we really save....it's not like we're buying thousands of tokens (as if we would..) We're just buying enough to go through the end of the year as the line up to get to the booths are insanely long and time is of the essence in toronto! I'm not going to waste my time waiting on the line when I can put in a token at the turnstyles. TTC...you already have your fare increase approved....at least provide CONVENIENCE to us commuters and stop wasting our time.
