City crews are busy in Downsview today cleaning up the site of last month's massive propane blast.

Workers are venting gas from tanks that are scattered around the Sunrise Propane facility near Keele Street and Highway 401.

As many as 1,000 tanks need to be taken care of as a safety precaution because the lids could pop and become airborne.

City of Toronto officials say the gases inside the containers are harmless and residents should not be alarmed by whistling noises coming from the site.

The city took over the cleanup because it says the company failed to act in a timely matter.

It is unknown how long the entire operation will take. Technicians will be on-site from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. every day until the operation is completed.

More than 12,000 residents were displaced after the Aug. 10 explosion, which killed a Sunrise Propane employee. Veteran firefighter Bob Leek was also found dead near the scene of the blast.
