The province’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a 55-year-old man who was struck by a TTC bus at a subway station on Tuesday night following an interaction with Toronto police.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) announced on Thursday that it invoked its mandate and is looking into the circumstances surrounding the Dec. 10 collision that occurred at Ossington Station.
Toronto police encountered a man in the station “who was behaving in a strange manner,” the SIU said.
Officers spoke with the man and later left. Shortly after exiting the station, the man fell onto the road and was then pinned under a TTC bus.
Police said he suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The SIU said a post-mortem was conducted Thursday morning. It assigned two investigators and one forensic investigator to the case.
The SIU, which is called in to investigate whenever police are involved in incidents that resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault, is asking anyone with information to contact its investigators at 1-800-787-8529.
