TORONTO -- The New Democrats are promising $15 million annually to expand school nutrition programs in Ontario.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says there are too many kids in the province who are going to school hungry -- a situation she says leaves them unable to do their best in the classroom.
Horwath says her party's plan -- which will use local food programs -- will help 70,000 more children have a good breakfast when they come to school.
She made her campaign pledge outside a school in a Toronto riding the NDP is hoping to retain in the June 12 election.
Horwath brought up the Liberal government's spending scandals in making her promise, as she has done most days on the campaign, saying they have wasted money on cancelled gas plants and mismanagement at the province's air ambulance service.
She says the New Democrats would invest in programs that "make a difference in people's lives."
