Police in Florida are releasing new details in the case of a Toronto-born law professor who was shot to death in Tallahassee one year ago.

Daniel Markel, 42, was fatally shot on July 18, 2014 at his home in Florida’s capital and at the time of the shooting, police said they believed that the Florida State University teacher had been “targeted.” Investigators did not, however, elaborate on a motive.

In a news release issued Friday, the Tallahassee Police Department said that investigators, with the assistance of the FBI, are continuing to actively probe the homicide.

Police released a new image of the vehicle wanted in connection with the murder.

The vehicle is described as a 2006-2009 Toyota Prius and its colour is referred to as “Silver Pine Mica.” Police say the vehicle, which has dark tinted windows, is missing a tow bolt cover on the driver’s side front bumper, has a black passenger side mirror and a toll transponder in the centre of the front windshield.

Police say it is possible that the vehicle was taken without the owner’s knowledge when the crime took place.

Investigators also announced Friday that in addition to the $25,000 Crime Stoppers reward, an independent source is offering a separate reward of up to $100,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.

“Our violent crimes unit has an investigator assigned to the case full time,” Tallahassee Public Information Officer David Northway said in a video posted on the police service’s website.

“He is continuing to follow up on all leads and tips that are coming in on our tip line.”
