Riding Profile: Etobicoke-Lakeshore
The Riding
Etobicoke-Lakeshore is a true bellwether riding, with a long history of constituents voting with current political trends.
When Bob Rae was premier, the riding was NDP but quickly changed to Conservative when Mike Harris was at the helm of Queen’s Park. For the last 10 years, the riding has been Liberal and only time will tell if this riding is ready to change colours again.
The riding is bordered by Dundas Street , Highway 427. Burnhampthorpe Road, Kipling Aveue, Mimico Creek to the train tracks on Dundas Street.
A byelection was called after Laurel Broten stepped down from her seat.

Q & A with the Candidates
What are the key issues in the riding?
PC - Doug Holyday Wasteful spending at Queen's Park
LIB - Peter Milczyn Transit, health care, education, jobs, economy
NDP - P.C. Choo Health care, jobs and scandals with the Liberal Party
GREEN - Angela Salewsky Political integrity and accountability
If there was one thing you could change about the riding what would it be?
PC - Doug Holyday I'd like to upgrade the shopping areas and try and help sell themselves a bit better to attract people from outside the area to shop. Something like Bloor West, they did the right thing over the years.
LIB - Peter Milczyn It’s a great riding and fabulous community but it’s a work in progress. We should be creating more parkland, boardwalks along the lake. I would like to see more of that.
NDP - P.C. Choo My mother in law moved here in 2004 and died in 2011. In all that time, she never managed to get a family doctor. Ensuring people in the riding get access to health care -- That would be my top priority.
GREEN - Angela Salewsky Transit is an issue in the riding especially with all the condos built here. There is no plan in place. It's the size of a small city on a street corner and there is no real infrastructure to support that increase in population.
Do you live in the riding?
PC - Doug Holyday No, live just north of the riding but grew up here.
LIB - Peter Milczyn I've lived entire life in the riding, I even went to U of T and stayed home.
NDP - P.C. Choo I've lived in the riding for 21 years.
GREEN - Angela Salewsky I'm a constituent. I've lived here for 10 years.
How would you improve the relationship between the city and the province?
PC - Doug Holyday I recall when Harris was premier they called mayors in to have a sit-down meeting on a regular basis to find out what they could do. Told him to try and control the arbitration process a bit better. Now they're not looking at relationship with existing employees and emergency employees.
LIB - Peter Milczyn I can bring perspective on current politics there and some of the current major issues the city is facing. We need transit planning beyond the city’s borders. That’s something that hasn’t been done as well as it could have been.
NDP - P.C. Choo I've been involved in municipal politics as a public school trustee. As school trustee, I had to work with all levels of the provincial government. I engaged councillors and the ministry of education.
GREEN - Angela Salewsky We can be more collaborative. I see a lot of self-interest -- leading candidates have a rivalry and are flip flopping on issues. I wouldn't bring any of that.
Did you always want to be in provincial politics?
PC - Doug Holyday I was quite happy being in municipal poitics, happy with my role, thought I had reasonable success with it. Hudak and others came to speak with me and convinced me that we could maybe take a Toronto seat and if we could take that, then maybe we could take others.
LIB - Peter Milczyn After Laurel Broten quit I started getting phone calls, thought about it for eight or nine days. It was not my burning ambition. I was pleased to support Laurel and I thought she’d be here for a while.
NDP - P.C. Choo When I was a school trustee, my daughter was diagnosed with skin cancer twice. Politics lost my heart then. But politics is in my blood. A lot of my colleagues are surprised I'm so immersed in politics of all levels, even international.
GREEN - Angela Salewsky I grew up in a household that always talked about politics. I was influenced by my dad who is a staunch Conservative. When my dad got sick, I couldn't have the discussions we used to have. That's when I found my own voice. That was 10 years ago. It was not until the last provincial election I thought, why not me?
What is one thing most people would be surprised to know about you?
PC - Doug Holyday What you see is what you get. I don’t conceal many things. I’m a grandfather of three lovely grandchildren, they live across the street from me.
LIB - Peter Milczyn I love to cook. I watched my mom make cabbage rolls and strudels and Polish, Central European food but I love to experiment with all kinds of food .
NDP - P.C. Choo I play with the stockmarket. I lost big on Facebook!! and P.C. stands for Pak Cheong or Pretty Cool. I have great fun with my name..Politically Correct, you name it!! But I AM NOT A TORY!
GREEN - Angela Salewsky I don't sleep well at night. There are too many things going through my head all the time. I worry about the state of the world, about Canada being sustainable.
