Tensions between Tamil protesters and police on University Avenue heated up Tuesday as officers attempted to take action on demonstrators outside the American consulate.

Police were seen using force to move protesters and shouting matches ensued as they tried to move the blockades from Dundas Street toward the consulate in an effort to decrease the size of the protest area.

Some people were seen with ripped clothing following the scuffle, which occurred in the morning.

Several protesters stayed at the site overnight as the demonstration, which has been causing traffic nightmares for downtown drivers, entered its second day.

The demonstrators can be heard chanting and beating drums, but for the most part things have been peaceful.

The protesters want the U.S., Canada and the United Nations to stop military action by the Sri Lankan government against the Tamil people.
