A 38-year-old motorcyclist is dead after he drove into the back of a dump truck on Highway 407 in Pickering this morning.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the motorcyclist collided with the dump truck in the westbound lanes of the highway near Brock Road at around 7:30 a.m.

“Apparently there were three dump trucks in a line that were all entering a construction zone in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes. During that transition, as the dump trucks were moving across, a motorcycle came from behind and slammed into the back of one of them,” Schmidt said.

The motorcyclist, identified as a 38-year-old Whitby man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are currently interviewing witnesses and examining the scene to try to piece together the circumstances around the crash.

“The collision reconstruction team is on scene… We are still working on processing the evidence,” Schmidt said on Monday morning.

“It is still going to be a little bit of time before we get all the answers.”

Schmidt said police will be examining video footage in the area in hopes that it will assist officers in the investigation.

“(We will) try to determine the speeds of the vehicles as the dump trucks were entering. Likely they were going less than highway speed,” Schmidt said.

“We are trying to determine the speed of the motorcycle as well.”

The westbound lanes of the highway were closed for the police investigation but all lanes have since reopened.
