A fuel spill prompted the closure of the Queen Elizabeth Way in Beamsville for more than two hours on Tuesday afternoon.

The QEW was closed in both directions between Ontario Street and Victoria Avenue in Beamsville due to the spill of a flammable liquid from a transport truck, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt said in a video posted on Twitter that a tanker truck had spilled Class III goods, which are highly flammable. Service roads in the area were also closed as a result.

Specialty vehicles were called in to transfer the substance from the compromised trailer to a new one.

The QEW reopened just before 6 p.m.
