One of Toronto’s most politically active families has a new member.

Coun. Mike Layton’s wife Brett Tryon gave birth to a baby girl named Phoebe at Mount Sinai Hospital on Monday, giving the couple their first child.

Though the birth caused Layton to miss a news conference unveiling the design for a new pedestrian bridge in his west end-ward on Tuesday morning he was back at city hall attending a meeting of the budget committee by Tuesday afternoon.

In a message posted to Twitter earlier in the day, the Ward 19 councillor said the new members of his family was already filling his “world with love and joy.” Layton also wrote that both mom and baby were “happy and healthy.”

“Filling my world with love & joy, Phoebe Layton came into our life yesterday. My brave @bretttryon, a gladiator,” Layton said.

After Layton announced the arrival of his daughter on Tuesday morning, a number of prominent politicians took to Twitter to congratulate him, including federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair and Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.

Fellow city councillor Joe Cressy also tweeted a photo of him holding the child in the hospital, noting that his “heart may just burst.”

Layton, of course, is the son of late NDP Leader Jack Layton and the step-son of formal NDP MP and mayoral candidate Olivia Chow.
